LSWR 12T Ballast Hopper (SR diag 1734)

These hoppers were built in three batches, totalling 32, between 1898 and 1903. They were riginally built to convey ballast from Meldon Quarry to the rest of the large LSWR system. By 1903 they had been displaced for the long distance work, by the much larger bogie hoppers. They were then relegated to the shorter distance deliveries to the South West of the system. They were never vacuum braked or piped, and were withdrawn around the 1950/60s.

An almost identical vehicle, apart from axleboxes and some minor detail changes, ran on the GWR (Diag P7). Similarly the GNSR used a vehicle to the same design (Diag 35S).
