10T Ballast Plough and Brake Van

The plough vans spent most of their lives running with the 40T bogie hoppers in block trains, but originally they were built for use with the 4 wheel 12T hopper. Three were built in 1898 without vacuum through pipes (they were never vacuum braked) and a further two in 1903 with vacuum pipes, the original three being piped around 1904

The vans survived until around 1947 although actual ploughing was infrequent because of the outside conductor rail.

An almost identical vehicle, apart from axleboxes and some minor detail changes, ran on the GWR (Diag AA5). Similarly the GNSR used a vehicle to almost the same design (Diag 37S).
