LSWR Bogie Directors Saloon of 1885

This saloon was built specifically for the use of the LSWR Directors. Unusually it has a clerestory and a caboose on the roof, which also had domed ends. Also very unusually it was painted “dark glossy green” instead of the standard salmon and brown. The vehicle had a very long operational life which included some major changes.
Sometime between 1907 and 1925 (the exact date is unknown) it was converted to electric lighting at which point the gas cylinders were moved from the underframe onto the roof to make way for battery boxes.

The SBM kit will build the Saloon as it existed up to this change. After this date it is noted as having doors in the ends and an extra door for a guard on one side.

The vehicle, after many more modifications, was scrapped in 1963/64.

More complete details are contained in “LSWR Carriages Volume 1” by Gordon Weddell (p151).
