LSWR
Bogie Directors Saloon of 1885 as modified 1950 and 1958
The original LSWR Bogie Directors Saloon which was modified circa 1925
was further modified in 1950 by fitting a new underframe (from a corridor
coach so it was too wide!). A second guard’s door was fitted and
the three gas tanks on the roof were placed onto the roof center line.
The distinctive caboose and clerestory was removed. Interestingly a
searchlight was fitted to the ends of the vehicle.
The 1958 modifications involved removing the gas tanks from the roof
and replacing them with gas bottles carried in boxes slung under the
underframe (in place of one battery box). The vehicle remained in active
service until 1961 and was eventually scrapped in 1963/64.
