LSWR 6 Wheel Directors Saloon of 1877

Built for the use of Directors to make regular inspections of the system, originally it was not provided with lavatory facilities and the coach thus had a symmetrical appearance with doors at both ends (as shown in an 1886 photograph). By 1899 a photograph shows it to be fitted with a lavatory. This is the subject of the SBM kit.

It was taken into SR stock, retaining LSWR livery until about 1931, surviving as an Inspection Saloon until at least 1939. The vehicle is unique in LSWR stock by having overhanging galleries at either end. The vehicle also has a mini clerestory on a roof which has domed ends – quite a peculiarity.

More complete details are contained in “LSWR Carriages Volume 1” by Gordon Weddell. (p77)
