LSWR
4 wheel 22’ Passenger Brake Van of 1884 (as
modified for the Inspection Train)
This vehicle is based on the 1884 22’ PBV which were built for
general suburban use and to permit making up additional set trains.
In October 1903 permission was given to convert two (by then described
as old) carriages “to provide for the inspection of the permanent
way”. Just what this conversion involved was unknown until recently
when two photographs came to light in a magazine, dated April 1905,
showing the “LSWR Inspection Train”. One photograph shows
clearly the end of the 22’ PBV with very large observation windows
in the ends and sides. This is the subject of the SBM kit.
The other photo shows a train consisting of the modified 22’ PBV
(side lookout) of 1884 + 6w Directors Saloon of 1887 + 6w State Saloon
of 1877 + modified 22’ PBV (caboose) of 1884.
Kits of all of these vehicles are available, from SBM, to build this
train.
