Singer
gentleman’s bicycle of 1890
This bicycle includes a stage in the development of the diamond frame
and was made by Messrs Singer & Co in 1890. The frame has a tube
extending from the steering head to the middle of a curved down-tube
from the saddle to the crank bracket. The wheels, were 30 inches in
diameter, with radial spokes and were fitted with wired-on cushion tyres.
It bears many similarities to modern bicycles.
The railcar
is a Sentinel, built about 1926 for a 2 ft 6 ins line in Ceylon (in
preservation and running on Sri Lanka Railways). Built and photographed
by Frank Sharp
